Kids Helping Kids - Go Ride a Bike! PDF Print E-mail

Mississauga Kids for Kids Healing CycleNow don't panic.  You don't have to ride a bike to enjoy this event! This Sunday September 13 is "The Healing Cycle" event in Mississauga. This event helps to raise funds for the palliative care unit at the Credit Valley Hospital. Now no one likes to think about this... but there are kids, right here in Mississauga, who do need palliative care. Two years ago, 9-year old Sarah LeMay asked the Healing Cycle Foundation if money raised by children at its event could be given to children who require palliative care.  Her question lead to the creation of a team of children raising money for other children. Sarah agreed to captain a Kids4Kids Team, knowing that 100% of the money her team raised would go to helping children who needed palliative care assistance from Credit Valley Hospital.

As a direct result of the Kids4Kids Team, the Healing Cycle Foundation was able to fund a Paediatric Palliative Care Facilitator staff position at Credit Valley Hospital. This position assists families who need to establish contact with local paediatricians and doctors expert in palliative care, once it becomes clear that the child no longer has curative treatment options. The Facilitator bridges the gap between community services, Credit Valley Hospital and multidisciplinary team members. If a child becomes distressed due to respiratory difficulties, pain management issues or other end-of-life complications the Facilitator communicates a plan of care and develops a system of “direct admit” from home to an inpatient bed, bypassing the Emergency Department, ensuring a smooth transition from the home, should the need arise.

Clearly this is a worth while cause.  Mississauga Kids is helping to sponsor this years Kid4Kids event.  If you, or your kids would like to ride in the event registrations are being accepted on the day of the event, September 13th. Make sure to come one hour before your expected route departure.  But even if you don't want to or can't ride there are other ways you can support this event!

Everyone is welcome to come to the BBQ Bash that will welcome the riders at the finish line!  Families work through the tasty barbeque, while they enjoy the stage entertainment, emceed by Tom Harrington of the CBC with a visit from Mayor Hazel McCallion. There's also exciting merchandise found in the live and silent auctions and draw-prize giveaways. The BBQ Bash is free to all participating cyclists and volunteers. Spectators can purchase tickets at the door for $20 for adults, and $10 for children (children 5 or under are free). There will be bouncy castles, face painting and other fun for all the kids.

Be sure to bring your check book... you just might find something at that silent auction you want!

Some of the article being Auctioned off will include:

Hope we see you there!
